I can't wait to give you today's posing advice for portrait photography. Photographing teenagers and older children for portrait photography is so much fun. They enjoy having their picture taken, to start. However, they are also becoming more self-aware, and in order to let that wall of self-awareness go away, they need a lot of praise and encouragement.

Teens are no longer in the kid stage and don't need to be chased about or made to act silly (although I still think humorous anecdotes or jokes are fantastic for making a teen laugh in real life).

The personality that youngsters bring to our photo sessions is one of my favorite aspects about photographing teenagers. Allow them to display their very cool, serious, or sassy side. And tell them that not everyone is smiling in every picture.

1 - Give Direction During Photoshoot

At this age, posing is the ideal means of controlling the body. At this age, youth may feel uneasy and uncertain. In spite of their self-consciousness, teens and tweens still like having their portrait made. Giving them guidance and complimenting them on how lovely they are will help them unwind.

Always start with the simplest pose possible. The simplest instruction you can offer someone is to start walking toward you. Make sure your directions are understandable.

Give them instructions for their hands and feet as they start to feel more at ease. Such directives like "turn your feet away from me and look back over your shoulder at me" or "put your hands in your pockets and kick out your hip"  Model the stances whenever you can so they can see where to put their body. Posing ought to start to come more effortlessly after they start to unwind.

2- Be Friendly

This posing advice should be an integral part of your business and client interactions, but it is also crucial when taking pictures of teens and tweens. Don't forget to capture all of the candid moments either! Putting your subject at ease and being amiable will help them enjoy the experience of being photographed, including teen portraits. Additionally, being amiable will encourage easy, natural expressions and eye contact.

Never undervalue the impact of speaking with your teenage subjects. Engaging them in conversation and learning about their interests will help you build stronger bonds with them. You'll probably find opportunities to laugh together while talking.

3 - Capture Their Personality

The personalities of teenagers are OVERFILLED. This makes it the ideal age to capture this personality in photographs, especially during senior portrait sessions. Allow the subject's personality to come through in their expressions whether you are taking pictures of a high school senior or someone else in the teen or tween age range. Include the occasional prop to highlight their passions or showcase their interests.

4 - Posing Boys and Girls (Sitting/Standing)

Teenage boys and girls differ greatly, so when you pose, you should emphasize these differences.

Boys typically want to appear manly. Boys should be posed directly in front of the camera or at a low angle to help with this. To demonstrate their masculinity, you can also ask them to cross their arms over their chest and adopt a serious expression.

Girls typically want to appear feminine. Girls can better accentuate their feminine shape by posing them with their weight on the foot that is farthest from the camera and at a slight angle to the camera. If you want to emphasize their feminine shape, you can also ask them to "kick out" their hip. Find other ways to draw attention to the distinctive features of their femininity, such as their hair, makeup, and clothing!
